'held' in my language means hero
about me
home
Everyone interprets the word held differently, dependent upon background and experiences; it can have positive and negative meaning. In language, meanings change over time and people use words without knowing their origin. Political correctness can be taken to the extreme, whereby people are hesitant to use certain words due to fear of how they will be interpreted. We understand things by using labels, definitions and description. Language and communication plays a large part in understanding self, relationships and mental health. Everyone has experienced love and loss in some form, which affects mental wellbeing.
In this work I have created a fragment of a love-story about loss, to explore both the restrictions and freedom that words and language give us when attempting to understand our-selves and others. Using and adapting phrases that are used by people, which tend to contain the word 'held, I have endeavored to replace the word Held with other words. One word can have many different meanings dependent upon several factors, not least the ears that are listening and translating. By adding images to illustrate the story, the interpretations of the words are influenced further. Whilst the piece could be perceived as being quite dark, it does not aim to paint mental wellbeing as something twee, but as something that has to be maintained through self-care ('Every day I try to do something to build and strengthen it')
The animation was created using still images and stop frame technique of pixilation, worked over frame by frame using a drawing tablet.
